| Diarrhoea and Vomiting
- Children: This illness is mostly caused by a virus and therefore does not
respond to antibiotics. If vomiting, then give plenty of fluids, Ribena or squashes in
small amounts frequently. Avoid milk. If the child also has diarrhoea the same treatment
applies. Then as soon as the vomiting settles start feeding with bland foods, e.g. rice,
pasta, mashed potatoes, bread, chicken and fish. Do not give dairy products, fruit or
juices until the diarrhoea has completely stopped. Paediatric paracetamol, (Calpol, for
example), should be given if the child has a temperature. Diarrhoea and Vomiting - Adults: The above treatment also applies to adults with diarrhoea or vomiting. If these is blood or mucus in the diarrhoea and an obvious association with suspicious foods, then antibiotics may be necessary. Call the surgery for advice if this is the case. |
