The Kenton Bridge Medical Centre: Colds
Colds (virus infections): Symptoms include a runny nose, runny eyes, temperature, aches and pains. Colds usually take 7-10 days to get better.

There is no cure for a cold. Antibiotics do not work for colds. Take something for pain and fever - paracetamol or aspirin. Do not use aspirin for children under 12 years of age. Drink lots of fluids - hot or cold. Inhalations with steam and menthol crystal may help clear the passages. (Do not use menthol, such as Karvol, Vicks or Friars Balsam for young children - in my experience this makes them wheezy and therefore worsens the problem).

Treating High Temperature:

  • Aspirin should not be used in children under 12 years old.
  • Aspirin and aspirin-like drugs (ibuprofen, Nurofen) should be avoided in people with asthma.
